Buy Bigger, Buy Smarter
A recent survey by online real estate outlet Trulia outlines some of the same wishes and wants that Costa Mesa real estate homeowners often talk about. Below is an interesting video from the
Wall Street Journal that hits a lot of what Costa Mesa real estate owners think about their homes as well:
It’s also interesting to hear about what is going on around the country- same as Costa Mesa real estate – multiple offers on homes, shortness of inventory, sellers not thinking it is a good time to sell, and pent up buyer demand.
Back to the remodeling.
What do Costa Mesa real estate owners regret? In my opinion, here’s the top list:
Costa Mesa Homeowners Biggest Regrets
- Wish they had bought a bigger home – Lots of times when people are shopping for a Costa Mesa real estate home, they don’t think about the future. They don’t think they could outgrow the home, don’t consider the need for storage, adding kids to a household, needing to work from home, etc. Buy the biggest house you can afford- that way you don’t have to sell and rebuy so soon. The national average time people spend in a home is only 7 years!
- Wish they had more storage – Let’s face it, Costa Mesa real estate homes were not built at a time when storage was in demand. Think about master bedroom closets, look at the garage carefully, and look to see how much space the attic offers. Our homes here in Costa Mesa real estate are notoriously short on storage.
- Wish they had a larger yard/or a pool – This is obvious. If you’d like a larger yard or pool, be sure it’s high on your buying criteria. There is no perfect home in Costa Mesa real estate, but be sure your land/pool needs are first on your list. It’s very expensive to put in a pool.
- Wish they had bought a remodeled home – As I mentioned earlier, most people have plans to remodel parts of a home, but simply just don’t get to it. If you are not a handy person or have the desire or money to remodel, be sure you buy a Costa Mesa real estate property that is already remodeled.
- Wish they had been more financially conservative – I always council buyers that they mortgage is with you every month. Be sure the payment (including taxes and insurances) is comfortable and does not bring you stress every month. It takes a long time for it to go away 🙁
Time To Sell
When I visit with Costa Mesa sellers, the one common thing I run into is that everyone wishes they had done more remodeling. I typically bring in my designer, and we do a good makeover with the rooms as they are. But most times owners say, “I really wanted to redo the kitchen” or “I always wanted to remodel this bathroom, but I just never got around to it”. I always tell people if they can afford it, they ought to remodel a room for the enjoyment it brings. Costa Mesa Homeowners Biggest Regrets.
