Check Out Friday Night Lights in Costa Mesa!

Newport Mesa FNL

No, it’s not the NFL, it’s FNL (Friday Night Lights) and it’s here in Costa Mesa!

As the name suggests, games are played every Friday Night at the Farm in Costa Mesa.

I am one of the league sponsors, and it is a privilege because I see how much the kids love it each week.

Here’s the scoop:

Age divisions are broken out between 1st-2nd grade (SO fun to watch), 3rd- 4th graders, 5th- 6th graders (wow, can these kids play), and the high division for the 7th-8th graders. Teams are homegrown, so you can make your own, or jump on a team that needs players. It’s pretty safe too, from what I have seen. Not much contact at all.

The league is big right now – there are more than 800 kids playing every Friday night. Teams are small, with most teams fielding 7-8 players who play in a 6 vs. 6 format.

Quarters are quick, and most games are done in less than 45 minutes. The farm has great places for parents to watch, either on the small hills or you can get right on the sideline to be a bit closer to the action. This year the league even added its own cheer section, so the girls are represented as well! Awesome.

It’s super cool to watch as a parent – the kids really do well, and pull off some really cool plays, and it is in a fun, fall setting right here in Costa Mesa.

Want to watch? Each Friday night they have different food vendors, snacks, food trucks, games for kids not playing, and lots of socializing among friends. It’s a great way to get out of the house for an hour or two. The fall season plays through Thanksgiving, and the spring season starts around February.

A definite must see in Costa Mesa!!
