Balearic Park Neighborhood
Location
Balearic Community CenterThe Balearic Park Neighborhood is the small section of homes that is west of Mesa Verde Drive West and North of Adams Ave in Costa Mesa. It is also bordered to the north by the Mesa Verde Country Club, and bordered to the west by the Santa Ana River Trail.
Streets
All of the streets in the Balearic Park Neighborhood are named after Islands as is the theme in much of the Mesa Verde neighborhood. Street names like Balearic, Kornat, Capella, Boa Vista, Baltra, Chios, Inroz, Suva, Sumba, Ayon, Calvert and Europa are all islands of the world. The streets in the Balearic Park Neighborhood are wide, and many have mature trees.
Neighborhood Feel
The Balearic Park neighborhood is one of the best neighborhoods in Mesa Verde. It is mostly built with two story homes. There are two single story floor plans. One is a small 3 bedroom model of about 1400 square feet. The 4 bedroom model is a little over 1800 square feet. There is a section of Suva Circle where the original builder saved lots and had custom homes built for certain individuals. There are also many custom homes along the North side of Kornat Drive which borders the 1st fairway of the Mesa Verde Country Club, and provides one of the best and most park-like views in all of Costa Mesa. This could well be the best golf course location in all of Mesa Verde. Most of the neighborhood has mature trees and a great feel – friends often gather at the Balearic park which features a defunct elementary school which is now a Costa Mesa community facility.
There are a big mix of families here. There are original owners, and of course new families that have moved in. Homes here originally sold for $23,000 (!).
Interesting Info
There is a great photo if you ever get the chance to go to the Costa Mesa Historical Society that shows the entire Balearic Park neighborhood under water. The flat part at least- the portion up on the hill was still dry. Because of this flood that happened in the early 60’s, the neighborhood required flood insurance if you were going to purchase a home. That has since changed because the Santa Ana River Trail was reconstructed by the Army Corp. of Engineers to provide better drainage for all areas north of Costa Mesa and out to the ocean.
Schools
Residents’ children would attend Adams Elementary by location, and progress to Tewinkle Jr. High and Estancia HS.
The north side of Kornat Drive is an exception however – residents there are actually zoned for California School for elementary. Of course, other options like Davis Magnet School are always an option for children.
Park
Balearic Park is in the center of the neighborhood and is a great place for residents in this neighborhood to enjoy. The fields are often busy on the weekend with local activities. There are two playgrounds, one of which is for public use and another which is part of the community center.
