About the Community of Mesa Verde and Costa Mesa
Costa Mesa is a city in Orange County, California. The population was 109,960 as of the 2010 census. Since its incorporation in 1953, the city has grown from a semi-rural farming community of 16,840 to a primarily suburban and “edge” city with an economy based on retail, commerce, and light manufacturing.
Costa Mesa Background Information
In 1801, the Spanish Empire granted 62,500 acres (253 km2) to Jose Antonio Yorba, which he named Rancho San Antonio. Yorba’s great rancho included the lands where the communities of Olive, Orange, Villa Park, Santa Ana, Tustin, Costa Mesa and Newport Beach stand today.
After the Mexican-American war, California became part of the United States and American settlers arrived in this area and formed the town of Fairview in the 1880s near the modern intersection of Harbor Boulevard and Adams Avenue. An 1889 flood wiped out the railroad serving the community, however, and it shriveled.
To the south, meanwhile, the community of Harper had arisen on a siding of the Santa Ana and Newport Railroad, named after a local rancher. This town prospered on its agricultural goods. On May 11, 1920, Harper changed its name to Costa Mesa, which literally means “coast table(land)” in Spanish. This is a reference to the city’s geography as being a plateau by the coast.
Costa Mesa surged in population during and after World War II, as many thousands trained at Santa Ana Air Base and returned after the war with their families. Within three decades of incorporation, the city’s population had nearly quintupled.
Mesa Verde did not start developing until the late 1950′s and early 1960′s, with the final buildout of homes along Starbird Drive In 1978 in Mesa Verde’s Upper Bird Streets Neighborhood.
Mesa Verde – A Feel of Community
When developers and planners built the Mesa Verde neighborhood they gave much consideration to the planning of the neighborhood that had not been afforded the earlier neighborhoods of Westside Costa Mesa and East Side Costa Mesa. Consequently the Mesa Verde neighborhood has a wonderful feel, with lots of tall trees, lots of curving and winding streets, lots of parks for families to gather in, and two main features built into the neighborhood that many neighborhoods do not have. Mesa Verde Country Club is a well known and popular private country club that sits in the center/northernly part of the neighborhood. Also, the Mesa Verde Library is a fabulous place to take your children or yourself for books and lots of great resources, and it is a beautiful, understated building that has a great mid-century modern feel to it.
Business and Conveniences in Mesa Verde
Mesa Verde has experienced a recent boom in development on Harbor Boulevard, with many nationally known restaurants and other businesses coming in with restaurants experiencing the greatest overall success. Although land and space is now very limited in Costa Mesa and especially Mesa Verde; business and community development along with community design are key concerns of the Costa Mesa City Planners and City Council. Mesa Verde is exceptional in it’s conveniences, and has great access to freeways for those that commute for work, is close to John Wayne Orange County Airport (5 minute drive), and is within a 5 minute drive to South Coast Plaza shopping and the world class Performing Arts complex in Costa Mesa.
